Moving house is something that some people seem to really like doing. They seem to enjoy the experience of having a brand new property to move into. I find it a lot of work. As a golfing widow I often wonder what it is that is so attractive about the game of golf. My husband is away again this weekend, this time trying out some of the great range of North Carolina golf courses. I do not mind him having a hobby, I know that he needs something to do outside of the home and I know that it is a good opportunity to see his friends. What I do not understand is the attraction of this particular game. It seems very slow to me, there are much better ways of getting fit. It seems quite hard as well, very technical and the swing action has to be so precise. Then there is the whole handicap system which I do not understand at all. I much prefer to play a more energetic game which gets me fitter faster and then I can either play for a long time and burn loads of fat or just play a short game, still do enough to retain my fitness and get on with the other jobs that I have to do. Sometimes I wonder whether golf is purposely a slow game to keep husbands away from their wives for as long as possible! I must admit that my husband does try to get me involved, asking me to come along and trying to take me on golf holidays with me. He has even seen some NC Golf homesites for sale and suggested that we buy one so that I can be close to course and practice playing. I think this may have been more an idea for him than me and funnily I declined his generous offer! I know there are women that play golf but to me teh hwole golf thing is just something that men only understand!
If you are finding money tight at the moment then you need to expect things to get even worse in the future. Predictions are that this recession could last for years, there will be more job losses and . I have decided that the best thing to do is to buy a few things while I can afford them. I am lucky enough to have money to spend at the moment so I am going to make the most of it while I can, just in case things get worse for me. For example I saw some discount costumes today and decided to buy them. They will be great for next year and they were extremely cheap. I don’t think I will find something as cheap between now and when I will use them so I thought that it was a really good buy. Also I find it so hard to find any decent womens costumes that I tend to snap them up when I see something decent anyway and this looked particularly special. I think we need to be careful with money but not so that we cannot enjoy ourselves. We might as well be poor and happy than have a bit of money but be unhappy and constantly stressed. I am not suggesting you spend all the money you have and more besides but just take a bit of time to treat yourself every now and again and you will find that the quality of your life really improves. If you are more relaxed about money then you should be less stressed and feel happier generally which is something that we should all be aiming for. I believe we are here to be happy and so if that means spending a little bit every so often then so be it.

It is funny how I have memories associated with different foods. My Mother is very traditional in what she cooks so every Christmas we would have lovely fruitcakes iced and covered in marzipan, one round and one square. She would also make some chocolate cream and ice a chocolate roll to eat as a Yule log cake. Then she has her Christmas parties and always serves enormous chocolate cakes. I guess as I child we had a lot of different cakes, for our birthdays my Uncle would make a decorate a special cake for us. My Mum woudl make some little fairy cakes and fruit cakes as well. If we had visitors through out the year she would make a sponge cake and sometimes make cream or buy cream to go inside it. She would sometimes make scones and buy lovely jam and cream to go with them. I used to often ask her to make butterfly cakes, which were little sponge cakes with the tops sliced off, some butter cream added and the top split in half and put back on to look like wings. I think my favourite cakes were those we would buy from the local bakers. I remember going in as a child and looking into the glass counter to choose which cake I wanted. There was such a lovely selection of doughnuts, chelsea buns, iced buns and drippers. Then there were the cream cakes and the fruit topped tarts. I used to tend to choose doughnuts but sometimes, my Mum would let me choose a cream cake and I would either have a doughnut with cream or meringues with cream in the middle. I particularly liked these because you coudl easily take it apart and eat the meringues first and then eat the cream on its own afterwards. Wow it is a good job there are not shops like that any more or I would be as fat as a house!
